Artist Statement

Serving Women

I juxtapose US service women in combat with the domestic and decorative nature of heirloom tableware. In years past, material denoted an object's place as art or craft just as gender dictated a women's role in society but now gender does not determine one's place in domesticity or defense.

Platters are traditionally used by women to serve the family meal; the platters I create depict women serving our country. I seek to challenge conventional notions regarding the domestic functionality of ceramics and women. I choose to work with the ceramic material because it has a long association with women, craft, and the home. Women, like ceramics, have long been perceived as soft and malleable when in fact they are strong and enduring.

As a women who has served both her country and her family I explore ideas of the domestic functionality of objects and women. This duality is reflected in the form and surface imagery of my work.
